Overview
The Doolittle Gate at Beale Air Force Base was placed into service in 2007 at the intersection of Hammonton-Smartsville Road and Doolittle Drive. Since that time, traffic at this intersection increased approximately 350 percent. This increase in traffic is due to two primary factors:
- Mission expansion at Beale AFB, which nearly doubled the on-base population since the gate first opening; and
- Continued regional growth and development extending from the Sacramento area, resulting in increased traffic volumes along Hammonton-Smartsville Road
Today, approximately 8,300 vehicles, including Airmen and members of the general public, travel through this intersection each day. The proposed improvements will increase the capacity of this intersection to accommodate more vehicles. In the event one of the other three gates to Beale AFB is closed, these proposed improvements to the intersection at Hammonton-Smartsville Road and Doolittle Drive will allow diverted traffic to enter through Doolittle Gate without creating unnecessary delays.
Scope of Work
Project improvements include:
- Construction of turn lanes
- Adding an acceleration lane
- Widening shoulders
- Vertical curve correction
- Adjusting signage and installing new striping and pavement markings
- Reconstruction of existing roadside drainage
